Advent “O Antiphons”

Each is prayed during the last seven days before Christmas (December 17–23), and each calls on Christ with a different ancient title.

December 17 — O Wisdom
O Wisdom, who came forth from the mouth of the Most High,
reaching from one end of the earth to the other,
ordering all things with strength and gentleness:
come, and teach us the way of wisdom.

December 18 — O Lord
O Lord and leader of the house of Israel,
you appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush,
and you gave him the law on Mount Sinai:
come, and redeem us with your strong arm.

December 19 — O Root of Jesse
O Root of Jesse, standing as a sign for the peoples,
before you kings will be silent
and all nations will pray:
come, and free us, do not delay.

December 20 — O Key of David
O Key of David and royal scepter of the house of Israel,
you open and no one can close,
you close and no one can open:
come, and free the prisoners of darkness and the shadow of death.

December 21 — O Radiant Dawn
O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light and sun of justice:
come, and shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.

December 22 — O King of the Nations
O King of the nations, the one they long for,
the cornerstone that makes them one:
come, and save the human race,
which you formed from the dust of the earth.

December 23 — O Emmanuel
O Emmanuel, our king and lawgiver,
the hope of the nations and their Savior:
come, and save us, O Lord our God.
