The History and Meaning of the Glory Be (Gloria Patri)

The Glory Be, known in Latin as the Gloria Patri, is one of the shortest yet most profound prayers in Christian tradition. It is a doxology—a brief expression of praise directed to the Holy Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Origins of the Gloria Patri

The exact origin date of the Glory Be is unknown. Historical evidence suggests it emerged in the early centuries of the Church, likely during the first few hundred years after Christ. Early Christians used short doxologies as a way to end psalms and prayers with a direct proclamation of God’s eternal nature. Some Church historians believe the Gloria Patri developed in the Eastern Church during the first three centuries and was later adopted in the West.
